(22052020)Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School Principal’s Message

Principal’s Message

Dear teachers, students and parents,

Last weekend was the first weekend after the lockdown restrictions were gradually eased in Victoria and many families chose to stay outside enjoying the fresh air and beautiful sunshine on weekend. However, the attendance rate of our virtual classrooms still remained 97% and we sincerely appreciate the great support from our students, teachers, parents and all community members at this difficult time.

Since the start of our virtual classes, we have posted a series of reports on the online learning and I believe we all understand how hard our teachers have tried to transfer the face-to-face teaching into virtual classes, how enthusiastic our students have shown in attending classes and accomplishing homework and how active our parents have been as usual in supporting the teachers and the school. We are pleased to realise that the teacher-student connection and parent-school connection have been strengthened with more communication and understanding with each other even though the COVID-19 separates us physically.

I would also like to thank all the parents and students for supporting the activities the school has organised. Up to now, over 700 students have registered for the online Chinese Culture Camp which is totally out of our expectation. We have submitted the students lists to the organising authorities in China. Students would be separated into two groups – Junior Group and Senior Group and attend the event at different time. The event would last for two weeks with opening and closing ceremony online (through Wechat). We would sent out event notification to all the students who have successfully registered. During the online camp, students are expected to listen to stories or watch videos every day (for about 1 hour) and answer questions or rewrite the stories listened. Leading teachers of each class would provide assistance for students who have difficulty accomplished the learning tasks. Parents’ support would also be expected and appreciated as what have been done in online learning. Once the students have got used to the camp activities, it would be easier for them to accomplish the tasks every day.

Last year in Term 4, many students participated in the Chinese Speech Competition by sending their video footage of performance to us and the videos for final competition were selected and collected in the end of last year and were expected to be judged early this year. However, due to the COVID-19, we couldn’t gather the judges for the work and results are not available yet. I would like to present my apologies to all the students who have entered the final competition.

Now the performance videos of 180 students (grade 4 to grade 11) have been uploaded to the website of the school. All the teachers, students and parents are encouraged to cast their votes (https://xjs.vic.edu.au/speech-contest). The final result would be based on the public voting and expert judging. The top 6 students of each year level and their instructing teachers would be given awards.

There will be 10 weeks in Term 2 and the last week is 20/21 June. Term 3 would start from 18/19 July.

It’s getting colder now. Please keep warm and see you on weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Hu
