XIN JIN SHAN Holiday Newsletter (09042020)

Dear teachers, students and parents,

On Tuesday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced that Term 2 in Victoria would start next Wednesday and all students who can learn from home must learn at home. Thus, our school would also start Term 2 next weekend (18/19 April) providing online courses for our students, which would look very different from our traditional classes. This is a new challenge for both our teachers and students, moving from the face-to-face classroom environment to the online virtual platform where parents would very likely observe the classes. Everyone needs to learn and adapt to this new way of learning. I believe we could keep on our Chinese language learning with best efforts.

During the school break, I have received quite a few phone calls asking whether Term 2 would start as scheduled and discussing the pros and cons of online classes. I would like to present my appreciation to the parents for their great support to our school. We are now providing training and teaching seminars for all our teachers intending to provide the best Chinese language learning services for our students.

As a matter of fact, our VCE 12 students tried online classes already in Term 1 and most of them were quite happy with the new way of learning. As required by DET, we have reminded all the teachers and IT technicians to make sure no one-to-one online class would be conducted and students’ personal information, email and address would be protected. In Term 2, we would use ZOOM as the platform of online learning and students could attend the online classes through PCs or Tablets, which means students need to register a free account in ZOOM. The leading teacher of each class would send out user name and password to all the students of the class and only the students of the class could get access to this specific online class. The relevant information about using ZOOM can be found on our website at https://xjs.vic.edu.au/form_download/online-resources/. (If you have difficulty obtaining relevant equipment for online learning such as computers or Internet, you could seek help from your child’s mainstream school).

The arrangement for Early Learning classes, maths classes and drawing classes would be informed later.

We would provide online classes on both Saturdays and Sundays for families with more than one child enrolled in our school to get access to online classes with different equipment at different time. There will be three 40-minute classes available for each week and the detailed timetable would be available soon. If you have any problem for online learning, please contact the leading teacher of your child’s class or email us at [email protected]. We would try our best to provide support for each student throughout Term 2.

During the school break, our grade 6 teacher on the Accelerated Chinese Program has successfully instructed students to accomplish their Chinese homework. Please feel free to enjoy them at https://xjs.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/year6.pdf.

We wish you and your families safe and healthy at home.

Best regards,

Kevin Hu
